Overview

Research, design, and development were conducted for online photo-editing software compatible with Windows, Mac, mobile, and tablet platforms for a photo product company. This project involved close communication with the factory production line responsible for printing customer photo books, the marketing department, and customers located throughout the Netherlands and beyond.

Daily meetings with the development team and business stakeholders ensured that production progressed in the right direction, pursuing ideas and improvements gathered from review and testing cycles with customers through a combination of focus groups, surveys, testing sessions, and feedback from customer service. Additionally, web analytics were closely monitored to enhance the product conversion funnel.

Research and design progress

The business and its products had an enthusiastic and loyal following, resulting in a wealth of willing participants. This led to well-attended focus groups, user testing sessions, and interviews. As the Product Owner, I initiated this culture within the organisation and established the first testing sessions for the product as it stood upon my arrival. This effort shaped the design backlog and launched a new user-centered design process within the company.

The photo products were printed in-house at the company's printing press in The Hague, providing additional insights into potential improvements and customer trends.

Methods used included:

  • Diary Studies: Tracking when customers uploaded, edited, and collated photographs.

  • User Testing Sessions: Conducting free sessions on the original product and scenario-based testing on subsequent iterations.

  • End Product Observation: Conducting interviews and observations at the point of production.

  • Analytics: Regularly monitoring conversion rates and the funnel of the online web-based version.

  • Focus Groups: Gaining a better understanding of user feedback and needs.

  • Wireframes and Sketches: Developing concept designs and iterations.

  • Interactive Prototypes: Creating user-facing test versions of the products.
